Friday Discussion: Is the "Safe Career" Dead?
Bill Gurley says the workers who followed the traditional playbook — good school, safe job, climb the ladder — are now the MOST vulnerable to AI disruption.
His argument: people who are disengaged from their work, who never developed genuine passion for what they do, are the easiest to replace with AI. Meanwhile, workers who love their craft and actively build new skills have what he calls "free honing" — improvement that happens naturally because they care.
Here's what I want to explore with you today:
When you think about your own career or your students' futures — do you think passion and adaptability really matter more than credentials in the AI age? Or is that just something tech billionaires say?
I'd love to hear from educators who are helping students navigate this shift, AND from professionals who are feeling the pressure firsthand. What does career resilience actually look like in practice?
