The Faculty Time Tax: count what the week actually costs you
Today's teaching idea: The Faculty Time Tax.
It is the invisible cost you pay, in hours, for doing repeated low value work by hand. The Sunday night grind. The same feedback retyped for the fourth time. The syllabus rebuilt from scratch. Nobody sends you a bill, so almost nobody adds it up. When you do, the number is rough but real, often three to four full work weeks a semester.
This is not a discipline problem. It is a systems problem, and that changes what you can do about it.
I built a quick self audit so you can see your own number: https://www.harvestkernel.com/faculty-time-tax-audit/
Tell me this: which line item taxes you hardest right now, the grading, the discussion boards, the email, or the document churn?
