The AI Ready Course Redesign Kit

Four moves to redesign a course for the AI era without burning it down. Audit, Reframe, Rebuild, Share.

SeedStacking framework • Teaching Day resource • Work through it in one sitting or one move per week

Start here. AI did not break your course. It exposed the few assignments that were only ever measuring compliance, and it left every assignment that measures real thinking intact. This kit walks you through four phases. You can finish the first one before your next class, because it is just a list and one honest question.

Seed5 to 15 min

Move 1. Run the Offload Audit

Diagnose which assignments a chatbot can already finish for your students.

For each graded task ask one honest question: if a student pasted this into an AI tonight, would they get a passing version back in under ten minutes, and could you not tell?

Assignment Rating Why (one line)
GREEN YELLOW RED
Rating key. Green means the task still needs real thinking. Yellow means it depends how they use the tool. Red means the grade is now measuring the machine.

Confirm the pattern

I listed every graded artifact, not just the big ones.
My reds cluster around a handful of assignments (usually the take home essay, the summarize task, the definitional quiz).
Most of my course came back green. I am rebuilding a few reds, not the whole course.

My highest stakes assignment right now is:

Sprout15 to 20 min

Move 2. Reframe the Outcome

Lift the learning outcome above what the model does on its own. This move costs zero new technology.

If your outcome says (AI does this well) Reframe it to (humans still win here)
Identify / list / define Evaluate / rank and justify
Summarize the reading Critique it and defend your read against the strongest objection
Describe the process Diagnose why the process failed and propose a fix
Explain the concept Apply the concept to a case you have never seen
Produce the answer Verify a confident answer and find where it is quietly wrong
The move in one line. AI is strongest at the bottom of Bloom’s ladder. Move your target to the floor where judgment, synthesis, and verification still separate a student from a chatbot.

Rewrite one outcome now

Old outcome:

Reframed outcome:

Grow20 to 30 min

Move 3. Rebuild the Reds

Two paths. You will use both across a full course. Rebuild ONE assignment this week, not all of them.

Path A. Make it AI resilient (move the thinking into the room)

Add a five minute oral defense of the submitted work.
Add in class application to a fresh case they have not seen.
Require the process: notes, wrong turns, revision history, not just the polished product.

Path B. Make it AI integrated (give them the tool, raise the bar past it)

Have the model generate an argument; grade the student on finding its three weakest claims and sourcing the correction.
Have it draft the work; assess whether the student can explain why it breaks on the edge case.
Reframe the task from produce X to out reason the confident intern next to you.

My rebuild plan for one red assignment

Why this holds up. AI is great at products and terrible at showing a believable, specific process of struggle. Faking the integrated version requires the exact judgment you are trying to teach.
Harvest30 to 45 min • shareable

Move 4. Pilot, Measure, and Share

The move almost everyone skips. It compounds and saves your whole department weekends.

I am piloting the redesign in ONE unit or section first, not the whole course.
Evidence 1: did the work get genuinely harder to fake?
Evidence 2: did students actually learn more, or just suffer more?

Your one page before and after

Before (the red assignment and its problem):

After (the redesign and what happened):

I handed this one pager to at least one colleague in my department.
The quiet truth. Every teacher on your hallway is staring at the same red assignments, alone, at midnight. Faculty who share their redesigns save each other whole weekends.

Redesign alongside other faculty, not alone
