The Distinctiveness Criterion

A working session for one assignment. About twenty minutes, done by hand, nothing saved and nothing sent. You finish holding a rewritten assignment prompt and one rubric criterion that measures something a model cannot compress its way into.

What you have now

Seed

Before you change anything, put the current instrument on the table.

e.g. ENG 102, Unit 3 argument essay

e.g. A 1500 word argument essay using three assigned sources

e.g. Argument and organisation, 30 of 100

Name what is free

Sprout

A model compresses and combines. It does not ideate. Mark the surface it can already reach.

Be honest. This is the part that is now free.

e.g. Length. Correct citation. Covering all four required sections.

Find the specific

Grow

There is a category of evidence that is not in any training data, because it only happened in your room.

A discussion, a data set, a site visit, a guest, an argument that happened in week three

Your city, your term, your clinical site, this semester’s news

The thing that is not in any reading anywhere

A position that has to defend itself is hard to borrow

Write the criterion

Harvest

One sentence in the prompt. One row on the rubric. That is the whole change.

Write it as you would say it to the class

e.g. Situated evidence. Or: First hand grounding.

Describe the answer you would want to read aloud

Describe the fluent, correct, completely borrowable answer

e.g. 25 points, taken from organisation

That is one assignment

Read what you just wrote. It is better than what you had, and it took about twenty minutes.

Now count. You teach that assignment in three sections. There are four more assignments in the course. There is a second prep, and the spring syllabus landed last week. The change is not hard. The change is small. It is that nobody has an afternoon to do it forty times, which is exactly why the rubric in your course shell is the one you wrote in 2019.

That is the whole gap between knowing what to do and it being done.

Your criterion

Everything you wrote, assembled. Copy it into your course shell.

Then do it thirty nine more times

The Assessment Builder in the Harvest Kernel Faculty Toolkit does this against your Course Record, so every assignment and rubric it drafts already knows your course, your outcomes and your voice. You review and export. It is one tool inside the Course Creation Pathway, and it is the one that does this exact job.
