The Proof of Work Rewrite
Bring one assignment you already teach. In about 35 minutes you will leave holding that assignment rewritten so the submission carries the record of how it was made, not only the thing that was made. You do the thinking. Nothing here writes it for you.
Why this exists. A Berkeley working paper by Igor Chirikov found that after ChatGPT was released, the share of A grades in AI exposed courses rose by 13 percentage points, and that the increase was larger where homework carried greater weight. A submitted product no longer tells you how it was made. A record does. This session builds the record.
SEED
Name the one assignment
Pick the assignment you would be least surprised to see a model produce. Not your favourite one. The one that worries you.
SPROUT
Write the three line record
Three questions, submitted alongside the product. A student who did the work answers them in ninety seconds. A student who did not cannot answer them at all, and neither can a model that never watched them work. Write them in your own voice, for your own assignment. Generic versions get generic answers.
GROW
Grade the record, not the polish
If the record carries no weight, students will treat it as paperwork and you will have added work for nothing. Give it real points and say what full marks look like.
HARVEST
Write the AI line the way a school with fifty students wrote it
The Horowitz Andreessen Academy answers the AI question on its own admissions page in three moves. Permitted use in concrete verbs. Prohibited use in one clause. The reason stated, and the reason is about evidence rather than about ethics. Copy the shape, not the words.
Before you copy it out, one observation.
That is one assignment. Look at your syllabus. How many more are on it.
Doing this by hand works, and it took you about 35 minutes. Eleven more assignments is a weekend, and then you teach three more sections next term and it is a weekend again. That is the whole problem with the method, and it is a scale problem rather than a quality problem.
