The Classroom AI Boundary Card

A one-page tool that turns the boundary everyone already agrees on into something you can hand your students on day one. Plus your first rep for the week.

The 2026 research is clear on two things. Students, parents, and teachers already agree on where AI belongs. And the missing piece is not agreement, it is practice. This card gives you both: a boundary you can post, and a rep you can run this week to close your own Readiness Gap by a few inches.

Part 1: The Boundary Card (post this for one assignment)

AI is welcome here (support work)

  • Explaining a concept you are stuck on
  • Brainstorming angles or examples
  • Finding and organizing resources
  • Checking your own reasoning after you draft

AI stays out here (judgment work)

  • Producing the final answer for you to submit
  • Making the argument you were asked to make
  • Grading or deciding a grade
  • Any step where the thinking is the point

Fill in one blank before class: “For this assignment, AI may help with ____, and may not do ____. The reason that line sits there is ____.”

Part 2: Your First Rep (about 15 minutes, once this week)

  1. Pick one assignment you already give.
  2. Run it through an AI tool yourself, before your students do.
  3. Mark what it nailed. Where was it genuinely useful?
  4. Catch what it faked. Find the confident, fluent, wrong part. There is almost always one.
  5. Write the line. Based on what you saw, where does help end and outsourcing begin for this task?
  6. Say it out loud to your students, with the reason. That naming is the lesson.

The four moves you are practicing

Every rep above quietly builds the four things a prepared educator does: knowing how the tools fail, asking where an output came from, setting an explicit help-versus-outsourcing line, and judging a tool by understanding rather than speed. None require a tech degree. All are teaching moves you already make.
