Design the Future of Learning: A SeedStacking Toolkit for Educators

Design the Future of Learning

A four-phase SeedStacking toolkit for educators who refuse to be bystanders while the AI exponential reshapes higher education. Work through one phase or all four. Each builds on the one before it.

In his June 2026 essay, Dario Amodei compared our institutions to Treebeard, the ancient tree from Lord of the Rings who takes a full day to say good morning while the forest is cut down around him. Higher education is a Treebeard. This toolkit is how you stop saying good morning to the tree and start designing the new forest on purpose. Set aside time, grab one real course or program you teach, and go.

Getting Started · 5 to 15 minutes

The Treebeard Audit

Pick one course, program, or practice you are responsible for. Be honest about two speeds: how fast it actually changes, and how fast the field it teaches is moving. You are not fixing anything yet. You are just seeing the gap clearly, because you cannot design around a gap you refuse to name.

Do this:

My [course or program] meaningfully updates about every ______. The field it prepares students for now shifts about every ______. The honest gap between those two numbers is ______.

Produces: one honest sentence naming your timescale gap. The “I see it now” moment.

The AI Literacy Gap Map

Open one syllabus or lesson plan. Read it with one question in mind: where does this teach students to think with AI, judge its output, and adapt when the tool changes? Most syllabi were written before that question mattered. Mark every place AI literacy and judgment could live but currently do not.

Do this: List three specific spots in the material where you could add AI literacy, judgment, or adaptability without blowing up the whole course.

1. ______________________ 2. ______________________ 3. ______________________

Produces: three concrete injection points for AI literacy in real course material.

Redesign One Assignment

Take one existing assignment and rebuild it so AI is a sparring partner, not a shortcut. The move is simple and powerful: make students form their own answer first, then use AI to challenge it. Predict before you prompt. Now the AI sharpens judgment instead of replacing it.

Do this: Write a short brief for the redesigned assignment. Name what the student does before touching AI, what they ask AI to do, and how they document where they disagreed with it.

Before AI: ______. With AI: ______. Reflection on disagreement: ______.

Produces: one redesigned assignment brief you could actually assign next term.

The Future-Ready One-Pager

This is where you stop auditing and start designing. Write a one-page proposal for a single concrete change you would bring to your department, course, or program to prepare students for an AI economy. Frame it the way Amodei frames the moment: there is a window, and we get to design the future rather than inherit it. Then share it. A proposal that stays in your drafts changes nothing.

Do this: Draft the one-pager (the change, why now, what it costs, what it produces for students), then post it in the SeedStacking Resources community space for feedback from other educators doing the same work.

Produces: a shareable one-page design proposal. Post it in the community. This is your Harvest.

Do not design the future alone
