Phase 1: Seed

Awareness · you know what your AI knows

I know whether the AI tools I use have memory turned on right now.

I have opened my AI’s memory summary or saved memories page at least once and read what it believes about me.

I can name two or three specific things my AI currently remembers about my work or life.

I know where the data controls live, including the setting that decides whether my chats can be used for training.

Phase 2: Sprout

Pruning · the model of you stays accurate

I have corrected at least one inaccurate memory my AI held about me.

I have deleted or dismissed memories that were outdated, like finished projects or old roles.

When an AI answer feels oddly off-target, I check whether a stale memory is steering it.

I keep sensitive topics I do not want remembered out of memory, using temporary chats or by removing them afterward.

Phase 3: Grow

Directing · memory works for you on purpose

I have deliberately told my AI something to remember because it would improve future answers.

I have given my AI standing instructions about how to respond, like a preferred format, reading level, or constraint it should always honor.

I keep separate contexts separate, so my side project, day job, and personal questions do not bleed into each other’s answers.

I can point to a real answer that got noticeably better because of context my AI remembered.

Phase 4: Harvest

Habit · hygiene runs on a cadence, and you teach it

I review my AI’s memory on a regular cadence, monthly or better, not just when something breaks.

I made a deliberate, informed choice about the training data setting instead of leaving the default untouched.

I have shown at least one other person how to review or manage what their AI remembers.

I apply the same review, prune, direct habit across every AI tool I use, not just one.
