The Syllabus Extraction Test

On August 19, 2026 Google shipped a Gemini student hub that reads a syllabus and puts the dates it finds into a student’s calendar. Google Search now takes a syllabus as a source for a study notebook. Your syllabus is no longer only a document a student skims. It is an input a machine parses.

Extraction is lossy. It takes what is structured and drops what is argued. This session makes you do the extraction by hand, on your own syllabus, so you can see exactly which half of your course survives the trip and which half quietly does not.

Twenty minutes. Nothing is saved, nothing is sent, no account. Everything below stays in this browser tab. Copy your finished extraction out before you close it.

Open your actual syllabus in another window before you start. A remembered syllabus will pass this test. A real one will not.

Seed. What you are handing over

One line. The course, and how many sections of it you teach this term.

Sprout. Everything with a date on it

Go through the syllabus line by line. Every item that carries a date, a week number, or a deadline goes here, one per line. Do not summarise. Copy them.

This is the set a student’s calendar will contain by Friday, whether or not you put it there.

Grow. Everything that matters and has no date

Now the other pass. Every sentence in the syllabus that carries a policy, a standard, a reason, or a sequence argument, and is not attached to a date. One per line.

Late work rules written as a paragraph. Why the second essay comes before the midterm. What a good answer looks like versus a complete one. The reason the reading load drops in week nine.

Grow. The one that would hurt most to lose

Look at the list you just wrote. Which single undated item, if a student never encountered it all term, would do the most damage to their grade or their learning? Copy that one line here.

Harvest. One decision, today

Attach it. Write the dated line from Sprout that this belongs to, and the sentence you will add to it so the reason travels with the date.
